Design Build Wellwood Avenue (CR3) Bridge Over Sunrise Highway (Route 27)

Project Details

Client: NYSDOT, Region 10

Location: Wellwood Avenue & Sunrise Highway, Lindenhurst, NY

Project Summary

Involved replacement of an existing four span, approximately 222 feet long structurally deficient aluminum bridge with a new structure including new foundations. The new bridge is slightly wider to accommodate pedestrian and bicyclists and was connected to the existing cloverleaf interchange without any ROW taking.  Precast prestressed concrete beams were chosen as the preferred construction option in order to minimize construction time and impacts on the local community and traveling public as well as reduce bridge maintenance since the new bridge is 100% jointless.  In addition to the bridge work, project construction included roadway realignment, earthwork, drainage, curb, sidewalk, lighting, overhead signs, pavement markings, environmental remediation (asbestos removal) and on-going SWPPP inspections in accordance with NYSDEC protocols. Work Zone Traffic Control and construction staging were also key ingredients in completing this project on time and within budget.  In addition, community outreach to stakeholders including residents, businesses and emergency service operators played a crucial role in the successful outcome of this 30M dollar project. LMKA was responsible for providing independent construction inspection and testing services in accordance with NYSDOT specifications using Site Manager.
