Traction Boulevard Culvert Replacement

Project Details

Client: Town of Brookhaven, NY

Location: Canaan Lake, North Patchogue, NY

Project Summary

LKMA prepared design drawings and technical specifications for this challenging culvert replacement project located at the mouth of Canaan Lake in North Patchogue. The assignment required freshwater wetland permit approvals from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, US Fish & Wildlife and the Town of Brookhaven Department of Environmental Protection.   Once all environmental permits were secured, the Town procured a contract through the public bid process.  LKMA provided CM services for the project which started on June 25, 2010 and was completed on October 26, 2010.  The project involved the installation of a new precast concrete culvert structure adjacent to the existing damaged culvert which was removed once the new culvert was completed.  A fish ladder was installed on the south (downward) side of Traction Blvd to enable passage for fish and eels.  The project also involved the installation of additional drainage, new fencing, new timber bulkhead, guiderail, trash interceptor (rack) and new asphalt pavement (full depth and overlay).  The Contractor completed the project on time and within budget.  Distinguishing features of the project were the heavy dependency on Traction Blvd. relative to local traffic, dewatering and relocation of utilities above and below the culvert.  The Contractor maintained detour routes, coordinated access with emergency responders and facilitated access at the end of each work day, which minimized complaints from residences and local businesses.
