The Byron Young Fish Passage located along tributaries to the Peconic River within the Cranberry Bog County Park. The fish passage design used was a pool and weir style ladder to allow alewife to move upstream. A separate eel passage design was incorporated to accommodate the American Eel.
Mr. Byron Young was a NYS Department of Conservation Biologist who volunteered his time from March until May for over a decade assisting thousands of alewives on their migratory journey upstream. Old dams built along the tributaries have blocked migratory passage. Using nets, Mr. Young would assist these fish in moving from pool to pool. Mr. Young would also measure, count and record vital data of this species. The fish passage was dedicated to Mr. Young whose efforts strengthened this local ecosystem.
The video below shows an underwater view of the alewife using the fish passage to navigate upstream. The video towards minute 2:45 shows the top of the fish passage and the alewife making it up the ladder.
